selfless solitude (unfinished)
i am upstream and swimming
scales glistening in bright sun
golden pink and blue diamonds
or a shadow 'neath a quiet willow
anchored to the narrow bank of earth
see...i dance when you come to sit
beside me and watch in rippled silence
my tail waves all the way to the surface
toss a stone and I will chase the bait
out and into the sunlight's reflection
i am busy in my happy and lazy self

beneath the snow
ink for a poor man's diary
the lampblack of a lanterns chimney
I scrape over a fresh snow stained
from where I made my mistakes
I should stand at the door only
receiving handouts like a beggar
never to enter again where the sweet
scent of tea invites me
moving down the road
until I am home again
alone as it should be
waiting for the melting
you have startled me into believing
the snow will never be as white
nor the company ever as sweet
as we like to pretend
the lampblack of a lanterns chimney
I scrape over a fresh snow stained
from where I made my mistakes
I should stand at the door only
receiving handouts like a beggar
never to enter again where the sweet
scent of tea invites me
moving down the road
until I am home again
alone as it should be
waiting for the melting
you have startled me into believing
the snow will never be as white
nor the company ever as sweet
as we like to pretend
